retrieving compacted email

I've searched all over for an answer to this after my email was
accidentally compacted :) Is there any way of retrieving the mail?
Where do they go to? Any help would be greatly appreciated - email me
direct if you prefer. Thanks

Could you be a little bit more specific; what do you mean by "email was
compacted"? What version of Outlook are you using?

What do you mean with "compacted"? That doesn't delete any emails.
What exactly did you do and in which version of Outlook? Help-> About

Sorry about the lack of detail - I am using Outlook Express 6 and the
mail was accidentally compacted when it was being shut down after
clicking 'yes' to a message asking if I wanted mail compacting to save
space. I have looked for .bak file extensions in the recycle bin, as I
read that this is where they go but there is nothing there.

Well that's not "accidental" then is it? In fact you SHOULD allow OE to do
this, as otherwise your mail folders could be prone to corruption

Did you interrupt the process?

As soon as I realised I had clicked OK I cancelled the operation, so
some of my mail is still there but alot has gone missing.

That's probably why your mail is missing and not in the Recycle bin. Why did
you cancel it?
AFAIK the only way now to restore your mail is from a backup.....
