retiring the 1st DC in the domain

O

Owen@7

I am running a 2000 domain, all servers run Win2k /SP4.
I would like to retire the 1st domain server and use the server at a small
remote site
which is not part of the domain. As I write this, this machine currently
runs all 5 FSMO roles.

My qustion is, how shoudl I transfer these?
Are there any problems even if the transfer is succesful?
Any suggestion in general?

Regards,

No, but before i would run dcdiag, netdiag and replmon to check for errors
in your domain.
Any suggestion in general?

Do not forget to make another server Global catalog server BEFORE http://support.microsoft.com/?id=313994

Also check that you have DNS server running.

And again after to insure things are STILL corrrect.

Also check that you have DNS server running.

And that clients -- including DCs -- are set to use a DIFFERNT DNS server if
you are retiring a DNS server.

Same goes for WINS Servers too.

It is BEST to manually move the Single Master Roles (aka FSMO) to another
DC (or DCs) manually -- this way you KNOW it was done AND you know
WHERE the roles are now held rather than let the systems decide
(semi-randomly)
where to move them.
