migrating root domain controller (w2k)?

Hi,

I have one active directory forest, with a single domain. There is one
domain controller in this domain.

I want to retire the domain controller and replace it with a more
powerfull server. Is it possible to join this new server to the
domain, and transfer the FSMO roles across to the new server, then
decomission the old DC?

Thanks,

James

Yes, and it is advisable to have at least two DC's in a domain for fault
tolerance purposes. you can add additional server as DC in your domain,
transfer all FSMO roles to it and later decommission the old server (trough
dcpromo). Before removing DC from your network test this configuration and
don't forget about other services like DHCP/DNS/WINS.
