Restricting sites with content advisor

G

Guest

Good afternoon:

I'm setting up Windows Explorer 6.0 and wish to restrict access to all but a
select few web sites. I have tried preventing access to all web sites by
specifying:
* (Never)
*.* (Never)
*/* (Never)

However, any/all of these specifications does NOT restrict access.
Apparently, from what I can determine, since certain sites are rated "G"
access is granted.

I do not understand why this is happening as my interpretation of the rules
indicates that specifying specific web sites overrides the ratings of a site.

Does anyone have any ideas? Thank you in advance for any assistance.

Hi :)

You don't mention the version of Windows you are using, but, take a look at
the information here and see if it helps:

Hi Jan:

Thank you for your prompt reply. I already know how the content advisor
works, and had already read both of those articles.

I believe I am specifying the web sites correctly, however the content
advisor is not working as documented.

I have *.* specified as (Never)
and *.microsoft.com specified as (Always)

I would assume that the only sites I should be able to get to are the
microsoft.com sites. However, I can get to www.aol.com, and www.msn.com
without restrictions. It appears that the "*.* (Never)" entry has no effect.
The sites that are blocked are those without ratings, but any site rated “G"
is allowed despite the “*.* (Never)†entry.

Also note, if I specify “*.com (Never)†the desired result is achieved, but
ONLY for *.com sites. How do I specify ALL sites? Moreover, how do I
restrict access to ONLY the web sites I specifically list?

Hello Jan (again):

I was able to block access to all sites by entering:
/*/ (Never)

However, I now cannot specify any sites to allow access.

My goal is to block access to ALL sites, regardless of rating, and allow
access to 5 or 6 specific sites, again regardless of rating.

Hi :)

You say that you cannot specify any sites to allow access. What exactly
happens when you try to do this? Do you get any error messages? If so, what
is the exact wording? We can not see what you do, so you must be our verbal
eyes and let us know what you are seeing. :)

It may also be that you have some conflictive entries that may be causing
the confusion with the program. Perhaps you might put the Content Advisor
back to the default condition, and then try your entries with a fresh slate.

Good morning Don:

Thank you for your reply. I looked at the document and it seems to be
helpful.

However, late last night I discovered a simpler (I think) way to accomplish
my goal. I wrote a one line PICS rule:

(PicsRule-1.1 (Policy (RejectByURL ("http://*@*:*/*") ) ) )

Then I specified the allowed sites under the APPROVED SITES tab.

This seems to be working very well.

Again, thank you for your reply.

Good morning Jan:

I’m sorry I wasn’t clearer, and I’ll try to explain this more fully. There
were no error messages per se. The only messages were from the Content
Advisor indicating sites were blocked, or in some cases, the lack of a
message indicating site access was blocked – when they should have been
blocked.

In summary, the result I wanted to accomplish is to block access to all but
a specific list of web sites regardless of their ratings or lack thereof.

My first attempt was to specify (Under The Approved Sites tab):

*.* (Never)
*.microsoft.com (Always)

This APPEARED to work as attempts to access sites other than microsoft.com
were blocked by the Content Advisor. What I later discovered (when I was
successfully able to access www.aol.com) was that the sites were blocked
because they did not have a rating, not because of my entries. The AOL site
had a G rating and therefore access was granted.

Further investigation and testing revealed that *.* does NOT restrict access
to all sites. */* DOES! My second attempt was to specify:

*/* (Never)
*.microsoft.com (Always)

This also did not accomplish the desired result. Access to ALL web sites
was blocked by the Content Advisor. Apparently, the list of permitted sites
was not processed.

However, late last night I discovered a way to accomplish my goal. I wrote
a one line PICS rule:
(PicsRule-1.1 (Policy (RejectByURL ("http://*@*:*/*") ) ) )

Then I specified the allowed sites under the APPROVED SITES tab:
*.microsoft.com (Always)
*.msn.com (Always)
etc

This seems to be working very well, allowing access only to the sites I
specify.

Thank you for your replies and assistance.
