Different places for different systems. Why don't you
open up a little and tell us a bit about your puter.

Not my computer, it is my daughters who lives a state away. She has an E-Machine W/Windows XP Home Edition
She has lost her "internet explorer" . She can still send and receive e-mail, but cannot go to any websites.
I had thought by going back to factory restore condition, it might restore the internet explorer. Do you have an
suggestion on what to do........

It would but it would likely also delete *all* her files, for example email
settings, documents, homework, bookmarks/favorites, music etc!!!

Why didnt you just say that she has screwed up IE? So, the problem is she
needs to 'bootstrap' a browser, but she needs abrowser to download one,
right? Catch 22, nearly. So, I suggest she gets hold of something like an
AOL disk, (or any other ISP disk that offers a free trial), and (always?)
comes with a browser on it. that might be IE, or it might be something else
like AOL browser (is that netscape these days?), which will let her get on
and download whatever browser she then wants. If she is slightly computer
savvy she might be able to install just the browser, but if not, run the CD
install which will instal a browser, download the browser she wants (lets
say, the latest from IE or maybe the new Firefox browser) and then remove
the AOL install.

If the US is like the UK (where I am) you must be knee deep in those free
AOL CD's by now?

Hi

What help is an AOL CD going to give - in the UK as well?? That's going to
cause more problems. Ditch AOL and use an ISP.

WTF are you talking about? 'in the UK as well'? What does that mean?
"cause more problems"? More problems that not having a browser? I know
people have a downer on AOL but thats kind of extreme.

When "Quirky" things happen with XP and you need to see if it's
System wide or just local to the current profile create a new user.
Sometimes, the existing profile will get corrupted.

If the new profile doesn't exhibit the problem - then it's just a matter
of copying data from the old profile to the new one. Trying this can
sometimes avoid a "Repair" install or other drastic measures.
The key is to make sure the user's important data is backed up.

Why must we always have the spitting in shoes and pi**ing
in beers? First, the suggestion to use an AOL disk is a
valid one. Nobody said she'd have to continue using the
thing after she downloaded IE and reinstalled it. Just
use the thing to get on the net for a few minutes, then
cancel it!
Second, why not go to a friend's computer (or work,
school, public library etc.) and get the install package
for a browser?
Third, is she sure she lost the browser, or just the
shortcuts? Try using start>run>iexplore. If a browser
opens she's still got it. Make a new shortcut.

Thanks to all of you for your suggestions. I will e-mail her all of them and hopefully one of them will work.
It sure is nice to have a site like this for help and a " good laugh too". Again thanks so much......Darts104
