REQ: file name randomiser or "sort by random"

S

sha

Hi

Does anyone know of a freeware program that can either add an option to
right click to sort files in a folder at random or alternatively one that
will randomly rename files (keeping the file extension, which would be .jpg)
Ideally there will be a program that lets the user control the degree of
randomisation, e.g. rename every x number of files.

Might seem like an odd request but such a program would come in handy.

Regards

Here we go again: TrackerV3! (http://www.trackerv3.com/)

Simply press Ctrl+R (R like random ;)) to shuffle a file listing again and
again.

Don

PS: it's not "freeware" as such but it's free for private, non-commercial,
single home computer use.

I'll give it a go, thanks,

I gave this a try but nothing happened. Tried it with cap R and lowercase r,
tried it with the files highlighted and without. Tried searching in Help for
"random" but nothing showed up. Is there some setting I need to change? It
would be very useful.

CTRL+R (not Shift)... should work if you have more than 1 file in the list
(else random isn't really happening ;)). See also menu View/Sort By/Random
Order.
And yes, the help file needs an update.

Thanks for the reply. It still won't work, and Random is not in the
View/Sort By list. I have v4.00.0053 -- do I need a later version? FWIW I'm
using XP SP2.

You must be kidding, v4.00.0053 is from May'05! You cannot have all the cool
stuff while being on a nostalgia trip. I'd suggest you try v4.00.0161 (which
is from yesterday; I'll upload today's version tomorrow)...

really, I would like to know, there is obviously some blank in my worldview,
maybe it is a sign of other holes, maybe the alzeheimer's is surfacing ,
I can contrive to imagine several reasons
but I can also imagine tripedal martians sipping mint juleps.

Why?

The file name-space is considered to hold useful information,
often created and maintained with care and at some cost,
randomising voluntarily chucks away that information not just
for those altered but their relationship to those unaltered.

Why?

Thanks again for reply. I'll download 4.00.0161 tomorrow. Are you having an
update competition with Calendar Magic? :)

Some time ago there was a request by someone with a lot of music files which
had filenames showing the artist first and the song name after. He/she
wanted to randomise the list so that a selection with various artists could
be transferred to CD. Similarly I have pages saved from the internet, many
starting with the same word, from which I would like to take a randomised
selection.
