Replying to a email, winmail freezes up

When replying to a email my winmail will freeze quite often if I don't
maximize the email. I will notice a busy icon at first and then a total
lockup. I have to end task winmail and start again. Is anyone else have the
same problem?

Are you running any third party security programs like SpywareBlaster?
Also, Windows Mail is not compatible with most McAfee
or Norton antivirus programs. Those will need to be
uninstalled, not just disabled.

After uninstalling your non-compatible antivirus, download
and install a more compatible antivirus like the free Avast:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

Even compatible antivirus programs will need to have their
email scanning option turned off. For more on this topic see

I have only AVG anti-virus on the system. All other software are Microsoft
software. Including their spyware software.

I was thinking it might had been the new 8800 graphic card but no proof.

Well, you blew my best theory out of the water. :)

I don't have another suggestion to fix your Windows Mail, so
my remaining advice is to upgrade to Windows Live Mail:

I have the same problem as Kevinfla...
I have a new laptop running Vista Business. I run AVG with the email scanner
turned OFF as advised.
Windows Mail seems to churn huge amounts of memory to do anything at all
(approx 50 - 100% of CPU) so freezes are common.
Downloading email is usually OK; deleting email takes a bit of time, but
trying to reply to anything takes an age (up to 1 - 2 minutes) if it does not
crash or freeze altogether.

How do I uninstal and then reinstal Windows Mail or is there an
alternative......Outlook Express has always been fantastic for me, but I read
it does not work on Vista.

I can't find any patches or downlaods on MS sites for Windows Mail so it's
all nwe to me.

Any ideas?

Windows Mail will not uninstall or reinstall under Vista. Outlook Express
won't work under Vista.

Downloading and installing Windows Live Mail may be your best choice.

There's a couple of things you can try. The sluggish response when
replying is often fixed with this:
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/72674-windows-mail-slow.html?ltr=W

If no improvement, uninstall your antivirus, reboot and test again.
If improvement is now noted, I suggest you download and install the
free version of Avast antivirus:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

Its email scanning option will need to be turned off.
