Repairing XP

SBC Global News

Is there a repair option in XP? One of our laptops have XP
and some applications don't launch anymore. Word, Excel,
etc, cannot launch. Error is "Error performing inpage
operation." The wireless-g doesn't work anymore. What can
I do other than re-installing XP and all Apps in this
laptop?

Thanks in advance.

I believe that if you insert the Windows XP cdrom into your drive, you can
start the filechecker program, that checks to see if any system files have
been changed or corrupt, and will replace them from files on the CD. I would
also run a scan using Microsoft Antispyware AND/or Ad-Aware SE (availiable on
www.download.com), to see if there are files installed which perhaps
corrupted the machine/files in the first place. Also is there enough RAM on
the laptop? Has a virus scan been performed?

Hope this helps,
Jim

You should check your pagefile before you go reinstalling anything. If the
pagefile is sitting on the same partition as your system, try moving it to a
different partition. Also make sure that the setting to let Windows handle
virutal memory settings is enabled -- it is usually the most efficient
option. If you don't have another partition to move to, make sure you've
got space on the hard drive -- it may be that the pagefile is running out of
space to expand. If possible you could also try booting to removable media
(a DOS disk, for example) and deleting the pagefile completely, then booting
normally to let Windows recreate it.

If everything is fine with your pagefile, start with doing a repair for
Office from your original CDs -- if all else fails, just boot to your
original XP CD -- you'll see the option in there to repair an existing
installation.

instead of booting the pc as normal....go into the bios and select boot cd
rom,,disable ALL other drives and then when the windows cd is inside the cd
drive, continue to boot.....you should get an option to "Repair"
windows......

I do on my system.
