XP Pro Repair - will not accept key code

J

Jim Smith

I do computer tech for a small university.

I have a students XP Pro laptop which we had to run repair on (we provide
free computer repair to all students) and as part of the repair it naturally
asks for our XP Pro volume licensing key.

The key was entered and accepted, then the install locked up with the
ubiquidous 39 minutes remaining (sat there for over an hour, no HDD
activity).

I did a hard reboot and restarted the repair, but now when it comes to the
activation key window, it says the key (same one as before) is not a valid
key.

Where do I go from here, is there no way to get past this roadblock?

We have 3 or 4 VLK's all of which work ordinarily, but not this time.

if the key code is no longer
acceptable,

then my suggestion is to
reinstall a fresh copy of
xp.

in regards to why it stalled
it was likely stuck on a hard
ware driver.

incidentally, doesn't the laptop
have a factory restore built in?

Please visit http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/ and click on the Validate
Windows and/or Validate Office button then restart your computer.

If you weren't able to Validate, proceed as follows:

1. Download this diagnostic tool, saving it to your desktop:
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=56062

=> WinXP: Double-click on the executable to run the tool.

=> Vista & Win7: Right-click on the executable and select Run as
Administrator to run the tool.

2. After running the tool, click on the Windows and/or Office tab as
appropriate and then click on Copy (to clipboard).

NB: You may want to open a new Notepad file, paste the contents of your
clipboard into it & save for future reference.

3. Begin a new post in the appropriate Microsoft Genuine Advantage forum and
paste the results of the WGA and/or OGA Diagnostic Data in a detailed post:
http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/category/genuine

4. A troubleshooting specialist will analyze the data and recommend an
appropriate solution.

Have you tried the license key that came with the laptop?

Usually laptops come preinstalled and there should be a Microsoft sticker
under the laptop.
