Repair XP Installation

Monkey Hanger

Hi guys,

In an attempt to cure a long standing problem I intend doing a Repair
Installation (re-install over the top).
I have XP Pro SP2 with all service packs installed. I also have an XP Pro
bootdisk with SP2 slipstreamed in.

Before I undertake this, can you please advise me what problems I may find I
will have caused to my XP installation.

Please, no questions as to why I am doing this. That has been discussed at
length elsewhere in this group!

There shouldn't be any problem. Just backup your files and make sure your
computer is free of malware first. Run a windows update after.

Hi

If the CD was slipstreamed properly you shouldn't have any problems.
However, it would be prudent to backup any data files that you may want to
use later.

You say the current installation is screwed. So, sure, a repair install may
fix/wipe the problem but then it may not. Perhaps too, the new install
attempt will belly-up although that is unlikely. Make sure to back up
important data. Scan for and remove any malware BEFORE attempting the repair
install. You might run diskcleanup and defrag and checkdisk beforehand too.
I hope it goes well for you. I "watch" threads I reply on, so post back to
this thread and let know how it goes.

Thanks for the input guys. I have backed up already and "Ghosted" all drives
to an external disc.
I shall be doing it tomorrow and yes, I will post back with the results!

Thanks again.

After the repair install you'll need to go to windows update and
re-install all the post SP2 updates.

Well, I'm back.

I did the re-install, but it did not cure my problem.
However, it has confirmed that it is a hardware fault, so I have acheived
something.

Now, a word about re-installing. I was left with a system that crawled
along. Man, it was so slooooowwwww.
I ran System mechanic and tightened up the system but I could not get any
speed back at all.
As I had just ran SM before the re-install I can only summise that the
re-install was responsible!!!

Thank God I had backed up everything with Norton Ghost. I have just returned
everything to how it was before the re-install.

Thanks for all the help peeps. You gave me confidence to try.
