Removing a Domain

G

Guest

I have one domain in my company. Lets call it Domain A. When I go to
network places and search the windows network two domains come up. Domain A
and Domain B. I want to remove Domain B from the network. It doesn't exist
anywhere, its not our network. I think it came about years ago when a
consultant plugged his laptop into our network. I've been looking in DNS but
can't find any reference in DNS for domain B. Any idea how to remove the
reference to this ficticious domain so it doesn't appear in searches.

Hi George,

Thanks for posting!

I understand that you want to delete Domain B in the Network which does not
exist anywhere. If I have misunderstood your concerns, please feel free to
let me know.

Based on my research, it could be related to the browse list in the browse
master server. I suggest that you firstly verify which the browse master
server is on the network and afterwards restart the browse service. To
verify the browse master server, you may use the Browstat status in command
line as the following:

Browstat status

The response is similar to:

Status for domain DomainName on transport \Device\NetBT_IEEPRO1

Browsing is active on domain.
Master browser name is: MasterBrowser
Master browser is running build 1381
1 backup servers retrieved from master BackupBrowser
\\SmallerServer
There are 100 servers in domain DomainName on transport
\Device\NetBT_IEEPRO1
There are 1500 domains in domain DomainName on transport
\Device\NetBT_IEEPRO1

Please help me know the content of command on your side.

You are correct that I want to remove a domain form the browser list that
does not exist.

The contents of browstat status are as follows:

Status for domain DOMAINA on transport
\Device\NetBT_Tcpip_<99128AE8-AABE-44EA-A50B-AF773C94FD9C>
Browsing is active on domain.
Master browser name is: SERVER1
Master browser is running build 2195
3 backup servers retrieved from master SERVER1
\\SERVER2
\\SERVER3
\\SERVER4
There are 125 servers in domain DOMAINA on transport
\Device\NetBT_Tcpip_<99128AE8-AABE-44EA-A50B-AF773C94FD9C>
There are 3 domains in domain DOMIANA on transport
\Device\NetBT_Tcpip_<99128AE8-AABE-44EA-A50B-AF773C94FD9C>

Hi George,

Thanks for update!

Based on my research, I would like to provide you with the following
information for your reference:

The WINS service triggers a scavenge of obsolete records if the time that
elapsed from the WINS service startup has reached half of the renewal
interval. The renewal interval is set to 96 hours by default, therefore the
scavenge is performed after the WINS service runs continuously for 48
hours. If you stop the WINS service daily, that is every 24 hours, the
scavenger never gets a chance to run and the domain records are never
scavenged. Therefore, obsolete domains appear in the browser list and in
the WINS Admin tool with old expiration dates, but still marked ACTIVE.

RESOLUTION
==============

The resolution to the incomplete browse list is making sure that the
scavenging of WINS occurs. Basically, because there was a bunch of garbage
domain records in the WINS, we could never get to the bottom of the list.
Once we got scavenging working, we got rid of the bogus domain records and
started getting to the bottom of the displayed browse list. There is still
a limitation of ~2000 - 3000 machines in the browse list, but that's a
different subject. Currently there are discussions of whether/how the 2-3k
limitation will be addressed in the future.

WORKAROUND
===============

To work around this problem, enterprise Administrators have the option to
do one or more of the following:

- Decrease the Renewal and Extinction intervals.

- Leave the WINS server up longer than the half the renewal interval.

- Manually initiate scavenging through the WINS Admin tool.

- Use an AT scheduler script to trigger the scavenge with WINSCL.EXE. For
additional information on WINSCL.EXE read the section titled The WINSCL.EXE
Command Line Utility below.

- In large enterprises, daily jetpacking of the WINS database may be
necessary to keep the size of the WINS.MDB from becoming excessively large;
this also helps maintain query performance and database integrity.
Currently, the Jet database engine under WINS only supports off-line
compaction.

Hi George,

Thanks for update soon!

At this moment, please help me know if you have got scavenging working. Can
you see any non-existing domain record in WINS. I recommend you double
check if there are any records related to the non-existing domain which you
want to remove. Thanks for your time!

If there is anything that is unclear, please feel free to let me know.

Thanks & Regards,
