Removed Win2K installation

I've just installed WinXP (Home Upgrade) on a laptop which already has a
(broken) Win2K installation. I'd like to remove the Win2K installation.

I can see that it's in a different folder (\WINNT) to WinXP (\WINDOWS) but
I'm sure that there's more to this than just deleting it (for example, how do
I stop it from appearing in the OS list as the laptop boots?).

Also, is there any way to migrate the Win2K settings (network, printer,
installed programs)?

To edit/modify the Boot.Ini, you can Right Click My Computer. From
the menu, take Properties - when the details box opens, click the TAB
Startup and Recovery. You'll find an option "To edit the Startup options
file manually, click Edit. This will open Boot.Ini using Notepad.

As to migrating settings that would require booting into 2000 and using
the "Files and Settings Transfer Wizard". However, migrating programs
from 2000-to-XP isn't readily possible without a 3rd-Party migration tool.

By doing a Side-by-Side setup, you've got a mix of components from
each OS. You can remove \WinNT, but you'll have bits & pieces that
remain in Docs & Settings and Program files.

In the long term, you'd be better served by wiping the drive and just
install XP by itself.

Once you're booted into XP delete the WINNT folder. Then right click My Computer, select Properties, Advanced, Startup and Recovery. In System startup click the Edit button. You can edit BOOT.INI here and remove the reference to the Win2K installation. If you're not sure of what to remove, post the contents here.

I concur with the previous mention of modifying BOOT.INI. However, in my
experience, I would modify BOOT.INI first, then reboot in XP and remove the
WINNT partition. I would also backup WINNT to some removable media, first,
just in case you forgot something that was installed in the WINNT tree, that
you would like moved over to Windows XP.

You may want to check some WINNT registry settings ... remember you can
always load a Hive under Windows XP from the registry in WINNT ... this
would permit you to check policies, settings, drivers, startup options, ....
