Remove an uncessary icon from Control Panel

Hello,

I uninstalled an Iomega Zip drive with it programs months ago and yesterday
found an icon call Iomega Active Disk in my Control Panel, which is the
classic view, and I cannot remove or delete it. When I right-click on the
icon it gives only 2 options: Open and Create shortcut. Is there way to
remove/delete this icon? Thanks in advance for the suggestions. Have a
great day.

Easiest way to do this is using the free TweakUI Powertoy from Microsoft. Go to the following website and download/Install TweakUI.

Download TweakUI
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

Open TweakUI and click the Control Panel in the menu. You will see all of the programs that have an icon in CP. Remove the check mark from any you do not want to see.

If you wish to permanently remove an icon from the Control panel, click on Start/Search and search for *.cpl

The results will show all of the Control Panel icons. Right click an icon in the search results and select Delete from the menu.

Hi Madame,

You should have a program in Add or Remove Programs called Active Disk.
If you uninstall that program, it will remove that icon.

You are correct. I found the file in my Control Panel. When I tried to
remove it, I got an error message that says, "The following file does not
exist or is not a valid uninstallation log file. C:\Program
Files\Iomega\AutoDisk\uninstal.log." I think I need to reinstall the program
and then uninstall the Active Disk first.

Hi Madame,

You are correct. Often reinstalling a program that can't be uninstalled,
will allow you to uninstall the program after first reinstalling the
program.

You might need to reinstall the actual Zip Drive first, then uninstall
the software for removing the Zip Drive again.

Hi thecreator,

I did reinstall the original software but that did not allow me to uninstall
the file. I am thinking that maybe it was an update from Iomega for the
program and I don't remember what it was called. Thanks for all your help.

Hi Madame,

Could it have been installed from a program called Iomega Backup? I know
before you installed Iomega Backup, you had to installed Iomegaware software
first.

I have Iomega Active Disk installed only in Windows ME. I never
installed it in Windows XP Home Edition nor in Windows 98 SE, to my
knowledge.

I just went into the Control Panel in Windows ME and I opened Iomega
Active Disk. You have the option just to turn it off.

Hello thecreator:

Windows XP does not have that option. Sometimes XP will say that a program
has been removed or no longer exists and asks if you want to remove the name
from the Add or Remove list, but it won't let me in this case. After I
uninstall a program, I do a search on my computer for any left over files
that were missed during the uninstalling process in Add or Remove and because
I didn't realize that Active Disk belonged to Iomega, I must have deleted it
the file and that caused the Active Disk feature in the control panel to not
be removed properly. I think that this is going to have to stay as is or I
will have to call Iomega Tech Support.

Thanks again for your help.

Hi Madame,

http://www.tune-up.com/ TuneUp Utilities 2006 offers a free 30-day Trial of its software. Download it and install it. It comes with an Add/Remove Programs, as well as a Windows Registry Cleaner. Try it.

This program worked. I was able to delete active disk from my control panel,
but the Iomega Active Disk icon is still in the control panel. I tried a
Tweak EUI or something like that to find the icon and remove it, but no such
luck. I even did a search on *.cpl and came up with nothing. But I can live
with that for now. Thanks again for all your help.

The uninstaller from Microsoft did not work. The Iomega Active disk is still
present. But thank you for all your help. I am just going to leave it. I
got rid of what I wanted from my add/remove programs, and that what mattered
more. I don't even see the icon unless I use the classic view. Have a good
weekend.
