Removal of Messenger Service from Office XP (Home Edition)

E

EP Stanton

I would like to remove the onerous "Messenger Service"
program from my Windows XP(HE). Microsoft seems to not
allow anyone to contact then unless they fit sime pre-
programmed paradigm that fits a "cookie-cutter" template,
so whenever I try to contact them about messenger, I am
pushed off to the KB, which does not have my concerns
addressed, or the manufacturer of my computer, whom has
nothing to do with programming Windows XP.

If anyone knows how to remove this annoying program,
please e-mail me.

Thanks,
Extremely dis-satisfied user

Greetings,

To disable the "Messenger Service", click Start, then Run, enter "services.msc"and click OK.
Scroll down to "Messenger", select it, right-click and then choose Properties. Under startup
type, choose 'Disabled' and then choose the 'Stop' button. After the service is stopped,
click OK. Nothing in Windows or any real third-party applications should be effected by
this.

If you mean Windows Messenger, close down Messenger if it's running (right click the
messenger icon in the notification area/system tray and click close). Then click the start
button, then click Run and type in (copy-paste if you like):

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

Then click OK.
Messenger will then be uninstalled. For more detailed instructions and screenshots, go to,

E.K.

The messenger service can be disabled to not get anymore
ads ;)

-- Start >> Settings >> Control Panel
-- When that opens go to Performance and Maintenance
-- Then go to Administrative Tools
-- Then click Services
-- and Scroll down and highlight "Messenger"
-- right click that and select Properties
-- click the Stop button and in the start-up type select
Disable.
-- then click ok ^_^

-- now Messenger Service is disabled .. and *poof* no
more messenger service ads :D

i hope this helps ;)

Jonathan,

I can't thank you enough! I've been trying, from day one,
to get rid of Windows Messenger in XP Home. While I found
many 'answers' for how to accomplish this, none of them
actually worked ... but yours did. Instant messengers are
great fun, but NOT when the control is taken away from
the user, as is the case with Windows Messenger. I
sincerely hope Microsoft doesn't make this same mistake
in future versions of Windows.

Thanks again!

Peggy :)

Jonathan:

Sorry for eavesdropping on your solution to the annoying
Messenger Service problem; I, too, was plagued with those
pop-ups and they had me pulling hair out of my head.
Thank you, so much, for letting us in on the secret of
how to disable it.
