Remote Users Setup

Leigh Ann Brune

Hello Everyone,

I've been wanting to setup a remote desktop connection on several machines
in our office for remote access for users with very limited access.

I am having a few problems
1) After setting up & logging into a limited account, i receive many error
messages from various pieces of software installed on the machine. How can
i tell the computer not to run certain services for that particular limited
account? Also there are some pieces of software that will not run in the
limited account. How can i fix this?

2) Someone told me it is possible to few the screen on site instead of when
the remote user is logged in and goes to a windows logon screen. is this
true? I want to be able to see the screen at all times when the remote
person is accessing the computer and not just see a windows login screen.

All of these machines are Windows XP Professional. Any help would be
greatly appreciated.

Different software operate differently. Some will not operate unless by a
user with adminitrator rights. Some, at installation, gives the option to be
enabled for all users instead of only the user who installs it.
Some software will run by a limited user if you elevate the user to an
administrator and install the program as that user, then change the user
back to a limited user. Some program can be run by limited users by editing
the registry or changing the security setting on some folder.

There are many variations and your best bet would be to find out from the
program developer or read the manual for each individual program. Unless we
have the name and version of the software we would only be guessing.

You have different services running on a windows machine system services,
local services and network services.Usually a system and network service
required by windows is started automatically. A service with under a user
name is started by a program been used by the user. So limiting the software
to the user usually uninstall the service.

Windows RDC will not allow the host computer user to be able to view the
screen while the remote user is logged in. There are other programs such as
windows messenger and UltaVNC which allows the host to be viewed and
manupulated at the same time.

Hope this helps.

Will UltraVNC let you restrict which software the remote person can use?

We have remote users who I only want to give them access to 2 pieces of
software, file transfer capability; not able to delete files; not able to
access any network drives.

I'm not a certified network administrator so.... this is new to me. We are
a very small business and we want people to be able to come into us but with
limited access. We are currently using WebEx for this function but WebEx
has become very unstable and I am very unhappy with its performance lately.

Any advice? Direction?

I had someone tell me that she uses RD and that she has seen it to where you
can view the screen of the remote user. I don't know if she knew what she
was talking about.

Thank you!

Shadowing of remote desktop does exist - but not in all environments and it
is not the most intuitive setup.
Remote assistance allows one to share a desktop session.
UltraVNC or TightVNC are just freeware remote client/server applications.
None have anything to do with their permission levels on a machine - that is
File/Folder permissions, Group Policies, Local Policies, etc.

Are there any documents on Microsoft that explains the how tos of local
policies and group policies?

i have tried to play with the local & group policies and the last time i
did, i messed something up to where i could not install any software so i am
very hesitant about doing any of this.

would love more direction.....

thanks!
