Remote desktop- Changing Timezone

J

Jay

When I change the time zone using data/time control panel every thing looks
OK but after reboot of target the time zone setting is back to it was before
changing.

If KVM is attached to target device ( not connected through Remote desktop)
same operation works fine.

I am assuming some setting in terminal server is preventing the change.

Any thoughts

TIA,

Jay

You're conecting to an XPE device, or are you connecting from an XPE device
to a server?

TS in Server 2K/2K3 requires The RDP session login with Administrator
account privleges to change Date/Time

Hi JC,

I am connecting to my target device ( XP embedded image) using Remote
desktop from XP pro based PC.
I am connecting as Administrator. When I change Time zone it changes the
current time display accordingly . When I reboot the target system and
reconnect via Remote desktop the Time zone is not correct.

Regards,

Jay

Jay,

This must be the policy set (not-set) on your Terminal service client device that allows to redirect the Time Zone settings.
Try adding this reg.key [HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\Terminal Services],"fEnableTimeZoneRedirection"
I don't know if it works on XP/XPe though. (if doesn't work with RDP 5.1, download RDP 5.2 QFE and try with it too)

This policy Specifies whether to allow the client computer to redirect its time zone settings to the Terminal Services session. By
default, the session time zone is the same as the server time zone, and the client computer cannot redirect its time zone
information. If the status is set to Enabled, clients that are capable of time zone redirection send their time zone information to
the server. The server base time is then used to calculate the current session time (current session time = server base time +
client time zone). Currently, Remote Desktop Connection and Windows CE 5.1 are the only clients capable of time zone redirection.
Session 0 (the console session) always has the server time zone and settings. To change the system time and time zone, connect to
session 0. If the status is set to Disabled, time zone redirection is not possible. If the status is set to Not Configured, time
zone redirection is not specified at the Group Policy level and the default behavior is for time zone redirection to be turned off.
When an administrator changes this setting, only new connections display the behavior specified by the new setting. Sessions that
were initiated before the change must log off and reconnect to be affected by the new setting. Microsoft recommends that all users
log off the server after this setting is changed. Note: Time zone redirection is only possible when connecting to a Windows Server
2003 family terminal server.

Thank you all for providing information about this problem.

KM I tried your suggestion of setting registry entry with RDP 5.1 but it
did not work I will update the component to 5.2 level and see if it helps.
I will let you know the outcome.

Thanks again.

Jay

Dwayne,

Yup. The same problem.
Although the policy reg.setting I mentioned about is also yet to be
tested. I never tried it on SP1 or SP2.

All,

The problem with the time zone and RD appears to be fixed in XPe SP2.

Hi Dwayne,

Thanks for the update.

I have one more problem with RDP and that is with Autorun CDs. It appears
that when connected to target via RDP the autorun CD don't start
automatically (which starts OK on local desktop when KVM is attached to
target ). Can you verify that this problem is fixed in SP2?

Thanks for all your help

Regards,

Jay
