Remote Assistance problem

K

Kent McPherson

I'm trying to connect to my father's PC to help him with a problem. He has
XP Pro as do I. He is on DSL and I'm on a cable modem. He is directly
connected to the DSL modem. My cable modem is connected to a router and my
PC is connected to the router. We both run Zone Alarm but we both shut it
down to be sure it wasn't the problem. I get an email invitation to access
his machine but when I try to connect I get this error:

Remote Assistance connection could not be established because the remote
host name could not be resolved. Please try again.

Most of the time this message means that either you or he or both are hidden
by a firewall or simple NAT translation by your routers.

Each router (and DSL modem) must be set to allow port 3389 TCP and port 3389
UDP traffic through and forward these port requests to the internal IP of
the PC you wish to control.

What type of modem and router are you dealing with?

I'm using a Linksys wireless access point/router (BEFW11S4 V2/V3). My dad
is not using a router as he's directly connected to the DSL modem on his
end.

Its possible your dad's DSL modem is also a router. That may be the problem if you can't get TCP
Port 3389 open on the modem. I would contact the DSL ISP to see if that is the case and to see if
its possible to open TCP Port 3389...
