Remote Assistance - Vista requesting help from XP Home

Can Vista Home Premium send out a Remote Assistance request to and XP Home
machine?

My father bought a new computer with Vista. I have XP Home. I'd like to
take over his computer so he can see me set stuff up for him and solve some
issues he's having.

Both of us have a DSL modem connected to a router, then to our computers.
He sent me a request by saving the file and sending it via email. I opened
it, typed in the correct password but it would not establish a connection. I
get the following error message:

A Remote Assistance connection could not be established. You may want to
check for network issues or determine if the invitation expired or was
cancelled by the person who sent it.

Is there something we are not doing right?

Yes, you should be able to use Remote assistance. I think the problem is that you connect to his computer using private IP. This search result may help,

remote desktopHow to fix the error "Remote Assistance connection could not be established because the remote host name could not be resolved"? ....

Vista machine requesting remote assistance from XP machine

Does the previous post still stand?

I have read elsewhere that MS have very helpfully (not) implemented Vista RA so that a Vista machine can receive support only from another Vista machine.

Has this been changed at some point before release of Vista or is this another MS ploy to get people to upgrade unecessarily!!

This link describes how to set the group policy on Vista to allow various types of Remote Assistance, some options being more secure as the request information is fully encrypted and hence XP Remote Assistance cannot interpret.

Setting a lower security setting allows requests to be sent to XP machines that can be used to connect to the Vista machine.
