Reinstalled XP.....How do I......

G

Guest

I reinstalled XP due to boot problems with original. Was unable to even boot
up in safe mode, so I did a fresh install. Orig install is in "windows"
directory and new install is in "windows2" directory. How do I completely
remove the first one and also change book-up to remove the orig one?

Thanks
scott

That isn't the way it's done, i'm afraid. If you have a retail copy of XP,
rather than recovery disks, you need to insert toDC into the CD-ROM, reboot
your PC and then XP will install. You have obviously installed from 'within'
XP thus creating another folder for the operating system. This is going to
cause more problems that it will cure.
Visit my website http://xphlepandsupport.mvps.org Click the Win XP Faq
button and take a look at question 7 and 85. Please note that these
instructions are for retail copies of XP. If you have recovery disks then a
different procedure is used. Any problems, you have two options reply back
to this newsgroup or, if necessary, you can contact me directly via the
details on the Contact Me tab of my webpage.

It would seem that you skipped the first and most important step in
performing a fresh installation: formatting the hard drive. Instead,
you've inadvertently installed WinXP onto the same partition as original
WinXP installation, and created an unstable dual-boot scenario. Your
wisest course of action would be to backup your data, wipe the hard
drive, and start anew. Under normal circumstances, placing two
operating systems in the same partition is a recipe for disaster. A
careful, knowledgeable specialist can do this safely, for a short time,
but the ordinary PC user had better be backing up his data on a daily basis.

Simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of boot
devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)
