reinstall of xp and all of my programs are missing

A repairer uninstalled xp home and reinstalled it on my computer. It has gone
back to almost no programs. The programs are still on the hard drives but
almost all of them wont work now. Am I right in saying that the registry has
been renewed? Is there any chance that the old registry has a copy of itself
somewhere and that I can replace it into the new one?
The repairer has proven themselves to be enormously incompetent abd I dare
not go near them again. This is such a terrible disaster!!!!

There are various ways to save the registry, but you probably did not do any
of them. I'm afraid you should just reinstall all the apps to their
original folders, and start over. At least you will be able to search for,
and use old data files.
This time, learn from your bad experience. Back up the system. There are
lots of ways to do that. Spend a few hours finding out how to keep your
system repairable. Don't think I am scolding you, but rather telling you
what I had to learn the hard way myself. It's not really that hard, after
you 'get into it'. Best of Luck.

Sounds like they did a parallel install - not a repair install.
Find your installation media and install anew each application.

When you install a program under Windows the installer commonly writes files
into the Windows System folder. Reinstalling Windows has overwritten this
folder which is why your programs won't run.
You can fix this by reinstalling the affected programs.
