Reinstall native UPS service?

G

George Neuner

Hi all,

I'm running XP Pro with an APC BackUPS-ES 500 (serial cable).

I ( foolishly it now seems ) wanted to try using APC's monitoring
software. I tried a couple of different versions of APC's PowerChute
UPS software - all of which failed to work with my battery for as yet
undetermined reasons ( so far APC has been no help whatsoever ).

I tried to go back to XP's native UPS service - which worked prior to
trying the APC software - but the Power Options applet tells me the
service is not running and cannot be started. I checked in the
Services list and all traces of the UPS service have disappeared.

Does anyone know how to reinstall XP's native UPS service? There is
no option for this in the components tab of Add/Remove Programs.
The file "ups.exe" is still in Windows\System32, but it appears to
have no service command line options and no help.

PS: I thought about using System Restore, but I have never used it
before and I have been screwing with this problem on and off for a
couple of days. Does System Restore roll back data files as well as
system files?

Thanks,
George

Try making an new text file, changing the name to ups.reg and copying the following export from my registry into it. Or compare the following with your registry. Double click the file name if you make it

snip -- a large registry file

The reg file made the UPS service reappear in the service manager, but
I can't get it to work properly. I'm afraid that XP's service may
have been permanently screwed up by installing the APC software.

Thanks for trying.
George
