Reinstall McAfee VirusScan

I seem to be having difficulties updating my McAfee VirusScan version 8.0,
Build 8.0.41, Engine 4.3.20, from its current DAT 4.0.4399 (dated
14/10/2004.) On *repeated* attempts over the past two days, the download
stalls at about 27% and I am presented with an error message:

An error occurred while downloading the update package for McAfee
VirusScan.
1) Save all your work.
2) Restart your computer.
3) Reinstall McAfee VirusScan.

The version of McAfee I am using is the "perpetual product" version made
available by McAfee as a legal settlement to those disappointed by the
earlier 3.x versions. My question is this: do I need to completely
uninstall McAfee VirusScan prior to reinstalling it, or can I just
reinstall over the top of what is already installed?

You best to fully uninstall vs8 and security centre. Clean out temp files
and cookies as well.

The manual clean up as follows in this forum thread. Ok I just ran teh
add/remove path and temp file clean up but others needed the manual path.
