NAI/McAfee generating scan "time out" errors on Sun JRE 'class' files

David H. Lipman

Over the past couple of weeks I have noted a surge in McAfee, (VirusScan v4.5.1.SP1,
VirusScan Enterprise v7.0 and Netshield v4.50 SP1) ENGINE v4260 and latest DAT files,
generating scan "time out" errors on Sun Java Run Time Environment (JRE) 'class' files.

This has gotten *much* worse with the latest McAfee DAT files (v4292 ~ v4294).

The scanner slows down and becomes almost unusable until the scanner times-out.

Example log event follows:
9/18/2003 6:10:47 PM Not scanned (scan timed out) DLIPMAN-1\lipman C:\Program
Files\Java\j2re1.4.1\lib\rt.jar\STATEINVARIANTERROR.CLASS

I must have logged at least 20 events (and received their associated NetBIOS Pop-Ups) today
on my LAN.

Addendum:

I meant to state....

The scanner slows down the PC to a severe crawl the PC becomes almost unusable until the
scanner times-out.

I believe .jar files were added to the list of default scanned
extensions a few weeks ago. I've also seen the same issue, not sure what
can be done about it.

Have you tried pushing it through support/avert?

Malcolm.

Thanx Mal:

I have contacted a couple of selected personnel at NAI. I haven't received feedback yet
however.

If you have a good email address (not one of the published ones that either fail or are
never read), please email me directly with it.

Just remove ~nospam~ from my email address.

Hi David......

I was having a problem with the Sun Java .jar 'temp' files and wasn't
sure whether or not to delete them. The tech at Sun wasn't much help.
I had downloaded the latest update (j2re1.4.2_01) and I now had two
different folders......and the latest one didn't seem to get the
gazillion *.jar files that the old one did.

So on the advice of one of the MS MVP's, I uninstalled both of them,
reinstalled the latest one and went in via Settings/Control Panel and
unticked the cache in Java. Now, no more of those files......and I had
thousands with the version you are using.

Just my thoughts on this......why not update? And untick the Cache. Am
I in the right ballpark? (G)

Hi Heather:

I very happy to hear from you. I hope all is well. Isabel was NOT much of an issue here in
NJ -- Thank G-D !

Many softwares depend on Sun Java and included a variation in their respective execution
locations. On some platforms, there may be several versions in multiple locations so
updating or replacing is not an option and MS Virtual Machine is certainly not a replacement
