Registration files/delayed write error

Guest

I was having problems with any kind of software not installing (got error
message) and got 'Delayed Write Failed' (disabling 2nd hardrive on PC fixed
problem). So I system reset to factory settings. The PC worked fine for a few
weeks then software wouldn't install again (games already installed also
crashed or went slow) and then found on net changing Windows registration
files e.g. from 'C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start
Menu\Programs\Administrative Tools' to 'C:\%USERPROFILE%\Start
Menu\Programs\Administrative Tools' fixed the problem (have to change the
registration files once a week to %USERPROFILE% as they keep changing back).
The PC has worked fine for 2-3 months until a game crashed and the 'Delayed
Write Failed' came back even though the registration files were of the short
form still. Can anyone give me advice what to do next?

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in
the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for the last boot. No
Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate which also appear in
a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you
should double click for further information. You can copy using copy
and paste. Often the link will, however, say there is no further
information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

I've listed a few from the similar time frame that the PC had a major crash.
The PC at the moment seems to be working ok but this happened before I did
the system reset (went from weekly crashes to daily to hourly, etc). I can't
imagine the one about a loose cable is correct as for periods of time the PC
has worked fine. The list seems to be very full of errors cocerniong DCOM,
service control manager and a few others.

The comments by Ionut Marin seem to be touching on both errors:
http://www.eventid.net/display.asp?eventid=50&eventno=1839&source=Ntfs&phase=1

I would try HD Tune (freeware).
Download and run it and see what it turns up.
http://www.hdtune.com/

Select the Info tabs and place the cursor on the drive under Drive
letter and then double click the two page icon ( copy to Clipboard )
and copy into a further message.

Select the Health tab and then double click the two page icon ( copy
to Clipboard ) and copy into a further message. Also do a full surface
scan with HD Tune.

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties,
Hardware,Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?

Here's the info. Note that I don't think the hardrive is at fault as when
the problems happened before I replaced it and the same things are happening
with the new one. I tried doing the error scan but the PC crashed half way
through.

What does it say about the master drive. Could there be a problem with
cabling between the two drives?

Hi

It seems to fine, I know if I just use the primary drive and disable the 2nd
drive the PC will work a 100%. I guess I'll end up just having the one
hardrive to fix the problem.
