thanks for the advice Jupiter Jones, but my redirecting problem persists. i keep getting sent to http://www.best-search.info/1525/ this is a very annoying problem. the links that are especially affected are those embedded links that look like buttons, for example the GO button on this site. i can't even log into my college email site.

Take a look among these utilities and use those you haven't used
before.
Download the utility CWshredder:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/cwshredder.zip

Unzip - close *all* instances of IE & OE, hit the executable and
follow
the prompts.

You can also download Hijack This from here:

http://www.mjc1.com/files/merijn/hijackthis.exe

Go here:
http://mjc1.com/mirror/hjt/

For instructions on how to use it; you have to post the log it
produces so experts tell you what is good and what is malware

Try downloading, installing and updating the
spyware removers from the links below. Run both of them.

Ad-aware
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/

Spybot S&D
http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?lang=en&page=download

If these don't correct the problem, then get yourself a copy of
BHODemon, available at
http://www.definitivesolutions.com/bhodemon.htm .

It does not need installing - simply unzip and run the EXE program. It
is easy to use. It will find the hijackware DLL files, and give you
the ability to disable them.

Good luck

I don't know if this advice was in the original post, but clear your
temporary internet files and internet history before running the utilities.

after DL'ing CWShredder, flush both the IE cache and history, then reboot
into Safe Mode, and then unpack and run CWShredder in Safe Mode.

Then reboot into normal mode, it should now be gone. I recommend you make
a restore point at that time, as a safty net.

Get a decent firewall so you don't get it again, and (of course) NEVER
open an attachment you're not 100% sure of!

Note: you MAY still have whatever file originally infected you on your
system, assuing you keep your downloads/emails around, like most folk. CWS
is hard to detect, tho most recent (last couple of weeks) tools are now on
the lookout for it. Scan your system to try and find it (Ad-Aware or
Spybot). Google for more info on "Cool Web Search". It's a bugger!!
