Red x in IE6

Although there have been various questions raised about IE6 not displaying
graphics only the red cross in the square, (in my case gifs). There doesn't
seem to be a common answer or solution. We have over 20 PCs in our office
mostly running Widows98 and IE6 and most of these have the problem. All
was OK when using IE5 and the problem only occurred after upgrading to
version 6.

Although various people have offered different solutions, I am sure that
there must be some fundamental common cause rather than just file
associations and video drivers. It is happening on too many PCs for it to be
otherwise.

I have had many suggestions to "try this" or "try that" but does anyone know
the real reason why the problem has come about? I have even heard stories
about deliberate incompatibility between Microsoft and some graphics
software companies, though I think this may be far-fetched.

Any comments and advice would be welcome.

The problem seems to be with the encoding setting under
view menu. It will not default to the correct setting and
reverts to a setting that will not properly display some
pages and graphics. I too have searched for a fix and
there seems to be none at this time. We need to keep
bugging microsoft.

Do START, Settings, Control Panel, Add/remove programs, IE6, then click
REPAIR, reboot and then all will be OK.

Let us know it worked.

Thanks for the information guys,

I tried this and it does seem to have corrected some other problems that we
have had. Regarding the missing pictures, its now hard to tell because I
don't know if they would have shown before the repair. I suppose I should
have conducted a more scientific approach. Any way, time will tell. Ikeep
the newsgroup informed if there is any solutions.
