Images on Web Pages display Red X's... Problem Specific to IE6 SP1

V

veloman

I'm hoping that I will get a response from an MS guru on this. There's
probably another post about this somewhere, but IE6 SP1 tends to load
squares with little red X's in them in place of where certain images are
supposed to be on all kinds of web sites. The problem is not specific to
the site itself but to IE6 SP1. I remember that the regular IE6 and prior
versions did not exhibit this problem. I know for a fact that EVERYONE sees
these red X's but maybe some don't think it's really a big deal. I know
this because I've seen the problem occur with serveral different machines
even after a fresh CLEAN install of any version of Windows that happens to
be using IE6 SP1.

To all you MS gurus out there, please, just let me know if you're aware of
this problem and if it will be rectified in IE6 SP2 should it ever be
released.

Thanks

Well said. My problem exactly. I hope somebody from MS
finally notices this. I did a fresh factory install.
Everything turned to normal until I reloaded IE6 SP1.

What site/images exactly are you trying to view, I have not noticed anything
like that (except once, but that was the HOSTS file from Kazaa Lite).

Look at this...

Pictures Are Not Displayed on Web Sites in Internet Explorer
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=283807

Are you using a Firewall or "filtering software"?

Several of these are known to cause problems:
1) Zone Alarm Pro [Private Header Info - enabled?]
Reset "Ad Blocking" and "Cookie Control" to "medium"
"Mobile Code Control" = Off

2) Symantec (ISS\NIS)[Enable Browser Privacy - enabled]
Active Content - "Allow All Script To Execute"
Problem: some sites cannot detect the 128 bit encryption
Solution: Completely remove and reinstall NIS.
[more info]
Web Pages Display a Red "X" Instead of a Graphic
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=316545 [Norton Products]

3) Any "ad blocking" software that blocks "http_referer"
or contains entries that are blocking access to the desired site.

4) HOSTS file that contains entries that are blocking access to the desired
site.

5) Cookie blocking software that are blocking "required" Cookies.

6) Pop-up blockers that are stripping header\url info.

7) WebWasher Standard Filter/URL Filter

8) Make sure the following entry is not corrupt:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings]
"User Agent"="Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Win32)"

Note: "Win32" = Windows 98\ME
Other versions = (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.0;)

To check your "User Agent":
Paste the below into the Address Bar and view the output:

javascript:navigator.userAgent

[Example WinME output]
Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows 98; Win 9x 4.90)

:)

V

veloman

No I am not using any firewall, ad-blocking, cookie or pop-up blocking
software.
8) Make sure the following entry is not corrupt:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings]
"User Agent"="Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Win32)"

Note: "Win32" = Windows 98\ME

Paste the below into the Address Bar and view the output:

javascript:navigator.userAgent

[Example WinME output]
Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows 98; Win 9x 4.90)

Well I'm using WinXP and in the registry, my "User Agent" was for some
reason:
User Agent=Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Win32)

So I changed the Win32 portion to Windows NT 5.1 as that is what pasting the
above line you mentioned and then clicking . However, doing this still did
not cure the problem.

Any other ideas?

You should have left that the way it was.
That is why we ask for this diagnostic.
It is based on that User Agent string but built dynamically.
If you have recycled IE you may find that the result you get
from the Address bar check is now wrong.

?????????????? Okay well why would anybody suggest this to begin with?
Anywayz, I changed the value from User Agent=Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE
6.0; Windows NT 5.1) back to User Agent=Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0;
Win32). So now what???? Please give me more suggestions, this problem
still exists and I've yet to recieve and truly useful information.

Why do I get the feeling that nobody knows how to fix this problem?

That is the answer I got for the same question... ;)

The problem is 'auto select' for encoding is well known. All you can do is
avoid using that option.

If the problem resolves after rebooting, you may also have an overful cache;

Again... I'm asking the same question, is there anyone out there who
finally
found the "right" solution to the red X problem?

Problem is that IE6 is not recognizing the charset which lead to select
the
wrong enconding and not showing any pictures until you select it manually
(or rebooting).

I have the same problem. Will somebody please post a
solution to this? This is very annoying.

Hi Michael,

Go to Internet Options > General Tab, Temp. Internet Files, and hit "delete files".

Now there are aq number of things you should check:

1) On the View menu in IE, point to Encoding , and then click Western European (Windows).

2) Verify that Show Pictures has not been disabled:

- On the Tools menu, click Internet Options .
- Click the Advanced tab, and then verify that the Show Pictures check box is selected under
Multimedia .
- Click OK .

3) Restore Default Associations for Graphics File Types :

Go to Folder Options/File Types, and make sure that the following file types are associated by
default with Microsoft Internet Explorer (Iexplore.exe):
ART image (.art)
GIF image (.gfa, .gif)
JPEG image (.jfif, .jpe, .jpeg, .jpg)

4) If you have Norton Firewall or Norton Internet Security, uninstall and reinstall the program.

It might also be a good idea to install the latest version of Microsoft Virtual Machine:
http://java-virtual-machine.net/download.html

And here is an MS article:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=283807 : Web Page Displays an Image As a Red X or Not at All
(Q283807)

If that won't do it, some people have reported that unchecking "Enable third party browser
extensions" in Internet Options/Advanced inexplicably did the trick.

In that case, there may be a corrupted or ill coded IE plugin.

So if all else fails, by all means, try that, and tell us whether that fixes it.

Finally, here's MS-MVP Mike Burgess' list of things known to cause problems:

1) Zone Alarm Pro [Private Header Info - enabled?]
Reset "Ad Blocking" and "Cookie Control" to "medium"
"Mobile Code Control" = Off

2) Symantec (ISS\NIS)[Enable Browser Privacy - enabled]
Active Content - "Allow All Script To Execute"

Tony:

I have the same problem as Michael with .jpeg extentions.
I've tried most of your suggested fixes, to no avail. The
one I haven't tried is your number 3, because I hate using
IE as a picture viewer (I use third party shareware
instead). If no other solution is feasible, I will
restore the default extentions, but I wonder if you have
any other (last-ditch) thoughts.
