Recommend Trojan programme to go with NOD32?

Shirley Worrall

Hi,

I'm using NOD32 and have been very happy with it. I've read here a
couple of times, though, that it's not so hot on trojans. Can anyone
please recommend a reliable complementary programme?

Thanks,

KAV on-demand, AdAware and Spybot.

I've found that Webroot's Spy Sweeper is excellent at detecting and
removing spyware/adware. It found some that Adaware & Spybot
completely missed. However, it's not free.

Thanks for that also - I'll take a look. I'm happy to pay for stuff
that's worth having :)

Best wishes,

An extra free thing that KAV users can do is use the extra-defs to
augment detection of various controversial code. There's a KAV updater
at my web site which downloads the extra defs after doing a normal
update.

The KAV (for Windows) updater module can also be configured to get
those. Run the updater, select "change settings" and plug in (as first
choice): ftp://ftp.avp.ru/updates_ext

I found recently that /updates_x -directory has all the extar defs
plus x-files.avc.

Aren't these included when the program uses its internal updater?
I took a glance at their site and didn't see anything called extra-def,
unless it's the [extr-cab.avc]

Will this work if inserted and checked as [use alternate location from
the list], or do you "have to" substitute it for the Swiss site?

Using 4.5 here... I added the location and moved it to the top of the
list. You're still using 3.5 right? I've forgotten how the 3.5 updater
is setup so I don't know the answer to your question.

Not version 4.5 defaults.

Just ftp to ftp://ftp.avp.ru/ and poke around the /update dirs. You
need the "extras" (pornware.avc, riskware.avc, etc.) to detect "not a
virus" dialers and other nonsense. "Confirmed" the added detection
here.

What Jari is driving at, I believe, is that you have to be careful to
actually get the full set of extra def files including xfiles.avc. The
site he mentioned:

ftp://ftp.avp.ru/updates_x

I've updated my updater to use that one now (thanks for the heads up
Jari).
does have the full set. I don't know why they offer partial extra sets

I was going to ask if anyone knows what the "x-files.avc" covered...
alien infestation?
such as are included at the url you posted. But it is incomplete.

Seems that way...
I'm experiencing some unusual difficulties right now with these ftp
sites ... errors and retries. Once I determine that the site above is
ok and reliable enough, I'm going to change my KAV updaters to use it
since it's simpler than doing it in pieces at two different ftp sites.

I've had good luck with ftp://ftp.avp.ru/ from my location.

pornware, riskware, and x-files are the only ones not in my bases
folder, wonder if the old 3.5 will even recognize and utilize them?
Maybe time to upgrade?
