Word 2003, XP pro SP2
Need to activate the recent file list.

Per Help: Options/General/ "check Recently Used File List." But I cannot since it is
grayed out and does not respond. How can I get it back?

Thanks, Jay,

My copy of Power toys (ver. 2.10) does not include the option. A peek in regedit shows
that recent docs is properly set. So I'm still mystified.

: change the entry in Regedit.exe.

Correct, TweakUI 2.10 doesn't have the option any more. But I can say
from my own experience that the registry value behavior described in
those articles is correct.

Just to be sure: Did you look in the key

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

and find the value on the right side named NoRecentDocsHistory, and
set it to decimal zero?

Well, no. It's a REG_BINARY value which I reset to 00 00 00 00. Same results with
NoRecentDocsMenu. Changed to 0b but no results.

I don't know whether it makes any difference, but NoRecentDocsHistory is
supposed to be a REG_DWORD value.

If that doesn't help, I'm out of suggestions. You could try asking in a
Windows newsgroup.

Now it works. I changed the START button to XP instead of Classic and included recent
files in the options. Subsequently Word displayed the documents. Can't tell if that's a
cause and effect.

What exactly did you do? I am a computer novice wanting to fix this problem,
but I don't want to mess with my registry. I haven't used TWEAk and some
suggest is the problem.
