rebuild of machine

I want to totally rebuild my windows 2000 pc as its started to run like a dog
and no matter what, its not any better.
I've never done this before... do I need to format the disk first (if so,
how?) and then pop the cd in or if i start the cd will it wipe the disk for
me. This probably sounds like a dumb question but I thought I better ask
before i do it.

In amelia <[email protected]> had this to say:

My reply is at the bottom of your sent message:

Just use the CD. <g> Insert it, make sure the BIOS is set to boot to CD,
turn on the PC, follow on-screen prompts...

HOW TO: Install Windows 2000 Professional:

That *should* give you a good example. It's not very hard really. Have your
key ready, have your anti-virus and firewall's latest versions and keys
ready. Is there anything you'd like to save from the old installation to use
on the new one? Anyhow... Install your OS, install your firewall, install
your anti-virus, go online, update... In that order (for your own sake) if
you want to ensure the PC runs smoothly.

Just for the record, you mentioned it running slow? Clean the drive out,
clear out the malware if applicable, defrag, etc?

Thanks.. will try that in the next few weeks. I have done the defrag. I have
adaware and spybot installed - and of course firewall and anti virus.
Haven't done the check for trojans yet, so might do... Its a crappy laptop
and there isn't much space left on it either. I probably have a lot of stuff
i dont need or use, so i thought i may as well start from scratch. thanks

To do a clean install, either boot the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom or setup
disks. The set of four install disks can be created from your Windows 2000
CD-Rom; change to the \bootdisk directory on the CD-Rom and execute
makeboot.exe (from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the
prompts.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install.

Be sure to apply these to your new install before connecting to any network.
