XP rebuild

My Machine is stuffed and I want to rebuild it fom scratch
but I am unsure of how to do the operating system. The
machine came preoaded with Win98 and I bought the XP
upgrade dist retail, installed it and it worked fine. Now
I want to start from scratch again. I would like to
basically wipe the hard drives (back data done already)
and reinstall the basic XP Operating system.

My concern / Question is since I done have the original
win 98 disks can I rebuild the operating system using the
XP UPGRADE disk I bought?

Thanks for your help.

Yes.
The requirement to use an upgrade version is to *own* a previous
qualifying version's installation CD (with an OEM restore CD, see
below), not to have it installed. When setup doesn't find a
previous qualifying version installed, it will prompt you to
insert its CD as proof of ownership. Just insert the previous
version's CD, and follow the prompts. Everything proceeds quite
normally and quite legitimately.

You can also do a clean install if you have an OEM restore CD of
a previous qualifying version. It's more complicated, but it
*can* be done. First restore from the Restore CD. Then run the XP
upgrade CD from within that restored system, and change from
Upgrade to New Install. When it asks where, press Esc to delete
the partition and start over.

You have to have *some* CD of a previous system around that you can show
to the Setup in evidence of your entitlement. See if you can find a
Win98 (or even Win95) one on eBay. But make sure it is a proper retail
one (full or upgrade) and not some makers 'recovery' disk that will not
be recognised.

The original poster doesn't have his Windows98 CD.
