Re-Install Search Companion

Is there a way to re-install Search Companion? Apparently some registry keys
were deleted on my PC and now when I start any search I see a blank window
with no options, buttons or anything. When I click along the top menu, the
edit command will not present a drop-down list either.

Can I re-install just the search companion without having to re-install all
of Win-XP?

Hi Matthew,

You must be logged on as a User with Administrator permissions. Go to
Start>Run and key in:
%systemroot%\inf
then click on OK or hit ENTER
Locate the Srchasst.inf file, right-click on it then click on Install

You could try running System File Checker.....go to Start>Run and key in SFC
/SCANNOW then click on OK or hit ENTER. Have your XP install CD ready to
insert when prompted.

Another possibility is to d/load and install the "Windows XP Patch:
Directory Corruption Disables XP Search Companion":

I don't know if this stil a live problem for anyone - but I've just had it.
Couldn't start Search from the Start menu. PC just died for twenty seconds.
After trying al ideas from here and elsewhere finally found a solution that
worked. It was a problem with Internet Explorer not Windows.

Solution that worked for me:

Use iefix (downloaded from Majorgeeks.com) and select the remove iexplorer
option. This allowed a complete ie reinstal from Service pack 2 disc (or I
guess you could get it from Microsoft web site).

Hope this helps someone

I now have this same problem with Search Companion after using CCleaner.
Does anyone have any more recent experience with achieving a solution ?

Many Thanks.

Click Start, Run and type:

regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 %Windir%\srchasst\srchui.dll

Reinstalling the Search companion

1. Login as administrator
2. Click Start, click Run, type %systemroot%\inf, and then click OK.
3. Locate the Srchasst.inf file.
4. Right-click the Srchasst.inf file, and then click Install.

This reinstalls the files that Search Companion uses. When you're prompted
for the system files, insert your Windows XP CD, or point to
Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 folder (if you've applied SP1 or SP2
separately) which-ever has the updated system files.
