Search Companion missing

I am using Windows XP which I installed as an upgrade to
ME (not a clean install). I also have Norton SystemWorks
Pro 2003 installed. As far as I know, I have never had a
search companion since I installed XP. Whenever I click
on "search" ether from the start menu, or the windows
explorer tool bar button, I get a search panel that is
completely empty (just grey with a little close button at
the top). There seems to be no way to access any search
functions or change the search options because all of
this is only available through the search panel, which is
blank. Anyone have any ideas?

Mark - I had identical ME -> XP upgrade with Norton (both mess
installs) but was able to fix the problem. (which also fixed severa
other browser problems)

After many other things this last step proved critical.
Download and install the scripten.exe 5.6 windows script engine fro
microsoft.
