RDC over VPN stopped working

One of our remote workers (at a hotel) is currnetly having a problem
with a RDC over VPN that has always worked in the past. He connects to
the VPN with success, then when launching his RDC, he gets this
message:

"The client could not connect to the remote computer. Remote
connections
might not be enabled or the computer might be too busy to accept new
connections. It is also possible that network problems are preventing
your
connection. Please try connecting again later. If the problem
continues to
occur, contact your administrator."

We triued other RDCs & he cannot conenct to any desktop at work
location. The RDC is set to use Static IP address of desktops, not
computer names.
From my location, I have successfully connected to his desktop through
the same VPN. Could his hotel be blocking something? If so, how do we
tell for sure? And Secondly, why would the VPN connect, but not the
RDC.

Thanks

Make sure both sites are using the different IP range. Or these case studies may help,

Not sure I understand your response. The setup he is using has worked
successfully in the past from other locations. He is currently at a
hotel. I use the same setup he does and can connect from my location so
I know there is not a problem at his work location. Can the hotel
firewall cause this scenario and how would one know if it is the
culprit. Note--the VPN connects but the RDC does not.

Can he ping the desktop through the VPN tunnel?

The hotel firewall will not block the Remote Desktop request since that
should be going through the VPN tunnel...

What VPN client is he using? If its the MS PPTP VPN client make sure the
"Use default gateway on remote network" check box is checked. See this
article for help with that...

How do you ping "through the VPN tunnel"? If he can ping his desktop
successfully, what would that suggest?

I connected to the VPN and then tried to ping the address of my
computer. Request timed out. I also unchecked the "Use default
gateway on Remote network" checkbox on TCP/IP advanced settings. Still
could not connect to remote desktop. VPN still works.

Hi- I think pinging through the VPN tunnel is a different command
structure at the command prompt -not sure yet as I have never tried it.

Did you get my email at your onecom address?

You need to CHECK the checkbox, not uncheck it...

If you can't ping the remote desktop using its private LAN IP (on the work
LAN) while connected through the VPN then you need to start looking at
firewall software on the PC, something in the VPN server that may be
blocking both ping and Remote Desktop requests, etc. If you can't ping you
will not be able to connect with Remote Desktop. Of course this all presumes
your using the correct IP to call...
