QuickTime Repairs

I'm sure everyone knows by now MS Antispy is removing the
Quicktime Uninstaller File,

MSAS Detects

High threat - Infected files detected
c:\windows\unvise32qt.exe

After removing this its then not possible to uninstall
Quicktime. The Add/Remove screen entry shows but if you
click this it gives a error message and says it may of
already been removed and do you wish to remove Quicktime
from the list,

Going to Start Menu > Then All Programs > Quicktime >
then Uninstall shows a similar error and displays
unvise32qt.exe cannot be found.

Here's the only fix available for this:
---------------------------------------

Quicktime 7 is now bundled with iTunes so if you want to
repair this you need to install Quicktime again, If you
also want iTunes use this link

http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/win.html

Uncheck all 3 boxes for mail alerts and you dont need to
enter a email then to start the download but its 32.6 MB

If you want Quicktime repaired but do not want iTunes
then use this link

Standalone installer Version 6.5.2
-----------------------------------

http://www.softwarepatch.com/internet/quicktimedownload.ht
ml

This is 12.2 MB

This does need fixing but Im sure MS are aware of this,
If you goto start menu > All Programs > Quicktime >
Uninstall Quicktime you get a MSAS Red alert saying IBIS
Toolbar is trying to install and shows the
unvise32.qt.exe file,

Choose "Remove" your back to having a damaged Quicktime
player, If you choose "Allow" it says "Are you sure you
would like the threat IBIS to run on your computer" If
you click "yes" it then loops and keeps showing the same
Red warning alert's saying the Above so the only solution
is to disable the Real Time Protection, It then goes to
the Quicktime Uninstall display

Andy - if I merely quarantined the IBIS Toolbar item
(unvise32qt.exe) - can I just un-quarantine it? Will
this correct the previous action (quarantine) and make it
okay?

here's another fix use your computer back-up or system
restore. I'm sure this will work.

Thanks for the information regarding this error. I used
Andy's suggestion to patch/install the previous version
of QuickTime and it worked. Thanks for the help.

Hi Again

I missed that one ;)

System restore should work fine but you might lose abit
of work depending how far you need to go back and how
active you are on the pc, Also Win2k machines doesnt have
this feature but If there is a backup program installed
that would also work well.

If IBIS is just quarantined then it will return it to
where it should be by just removing it from the
quarantine area, With this being tagged as a High Risk I
think most users would let the scanner remove it on the
default setting then its not possible to get it back,

So the options up to now are Reinstall Quicktime, System
Restore if available or if its Quarantined then remove it
from there (Tools>Spyware Scan>Manage Spyware Quarantine)

It doesnt look so bad when you see all these ways to
repair Quicktime :)

Thanks very much Andy. Microsoft is aware of this, but I don't know whether
it will be fixed before the next scheduled definition release.

FYI
This does not happen with QuicTime 7.02 stand alone. It
does not have an uninstall.exe file, instead the uninstall
shortcut points to

"C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\Driver\11
\Intel 32\IDriver.exe" /M{4E5E22C2-1386-47AE-8EDE-
32DDCDCD6653}
MSAS does not flag that.

Stand alone (i.e. without itunes) QT 7 is available from
http://www.apple.com/uk/quicktime/download/standalone.html
(and similar sites in other Apple country sites, if you
don't want to download from nthe UK :)0

I removed IBIS Toolbar from quarentine and now I hear
from the group that it is something to do with quick
time. What is quick time and do I need it on my PC.
Thanks for any help.

Hi Pat,

Quicktime is a media player which works in the same way
as Real Player and Windows Media Player but designed for
media distributed in QuickTime, So its not essential you
have this installed, The problem is when MSAS removes
unvise32qt.exe its then not possible to uninstall it
unless you repair the installation first, If you had it
quarantined then removing it from there is all you have
to do to repair it, Then its up to you if you want to
remove this but it may be usefull to you in the future if
you try to view Quicktime clips

JRosenfeld,

Thankyou for the standalone link, I was looking for this
yesterday but apple do not make this clear on the site
they all seemed to be bundled with iTunes so I just post
the earlier version as the choice should be with the user
if they want iTunes or not, I obviously should of looked
in more detail :) I appreciate you posting this link so I
know for future reference.

Its still 31.6 MB so its a huge difference to the version
6.5.2 standalone size of 12.2 MB & is still promoting
iTunes alot more than the older versions did by clicking
any of the display Ad's but I appreciate this is standard
practice for business to generate income. I must admit I
cannot remember the last time I used Quicktime on myown
system its always been Real or WMP but wanted to post
some options to repair this after it was damaged by the
False Positive.

Thanks for your help

Hi Andy

Best way is to do nothing, QuickTime is small and
doesn´t hurt any system.

Or will all users beacuse of this bug uninstall QuickTime ?

;)

A

AndyManchesta

Hey Plun :)

I agree its not a problem but personally Id like to
repair it incase I ever wanted to uninstall it in the
future, JR said its not in the newer version so it will
only effect a small amount of users. I agree with you
that there is no reason to uninstall Quicktime as its
only a media player, the reason for posting was just to
let people options to repair if MSAS removes this file.

I hardly ever use QT and cannot remember the last time I
did, Its all WMP or Real files that I play but I'm happy
to leave QT installed incase I ever do need it sometime
but will keep the older version on mine because it never
gets used :)
