Question about XP Home Edition Upgrade

M

Mark Lincoln

Hi,
I have Microsoft ME so I qualify for the Windows XP Home
Edition upgrade. I'm getting a new computer and would like
to install Windows XP Home Edition onto it. To use the
upgrade version, do I have to install Windows ME and then
install XP Home on top of it? Or, can I just install XP
Home and punch in my CD Key/Serial # for ME when prompted?
They reason I ask is I do not want my new PC cluttered and
I would prefer just having a fresh install of XP without ME
on the hard drive at all.

you can just install the windows xp and it will ask you to place the cd for
your windows ME in for validation. Once it validated a product elegible for
upgrades, it will continue to install without a problem. One word of
caution, you can only install the windows xp on one computer so if it is
already installed you might have to call to get it activated. When they ask
why tell them you upgraded the system and are reinstalling from scratch. If
you didn't already install it on another computer then all shoudl be fine.

Greetings --

It's quite possible to perform a clean installation using the
Upgrade CD, provided you have the true installation CD for the earlier
OS.

Simply boot from the WinXP Upgrade CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process. The Upgrade CD checks to see if a qualifying OS
is installed, and, if it finds none, it asks you to insert the
installation media (CD) of that OS. Unfortunately, an OEM
"Recovery/Restore" CD will not work for this purpose; you must have a
true installation CD, complete with the "\Win98" folder and *.cab
files, or the "\i386" folder of WinNT/2K.

If you're getting a new computer, it will most likely have Windows XP Home
Edition installed on it already. No need to purchase another copy of XP.
