ok. My friend installed windows xp professional service pack 2 on my
computer. it says it is an evaluation copy. it says that my copy will expire
in 17 days and to upgrade to the retail product. well I didn't have enough
money for the xp professional so i bought windows xp home edition, but when i
went to install it, it says what i have will not support an upgrade and when
i search for compatibiity options it goes to search, then goes back to the
blue screen like it didn't even search. so i need to know what i have to do
to get this on my computer because i am clueless and my friend is unavailable
to help me. Please help!

Back up all your data. You will need to do a clean install of XP Home.
Because you bought an upgrade version, you will need to have an earlier
MS operating system to use as qualifying media.

Based on your post, I strongly suggest you find a reputable computer
professional who will back up your data and do the clean install of
Windows. I say this not to offend you in any way, but simply to be
practical. This will not be your local version of
BigComputerStore/GeekSquad. Get recommendations from friends, family,
colleagues. You do not need to apologize for not knowing much about
computers. You are not dumb, you just don't know this stuff. We all have
our areas of expertise. But be sensible and get the job done correctly.

Stay away from your "friend" who did this to you. S/he was not a very
good friend and certainly didn't know what s/he was doing.

Your "friend" did you no favor.

I'm afraid that the only way to change from WinXP Pro to WinXP Home is
to format the drive and start over. There is no supported downgrade
path or technique.

After backing up any data you wish to transfer to the new OS
installation,, simply boot from the WinXP Home installation CD. You'll
be offered the opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as
part of the installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order
of boot devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

Then the backed up data can be restored and applications re-installed.

You don't need the product code from 98, just the cd. XP will ask to see it
during the install process.
