Problems with Notepad

M

Michael

Notepad doesn't work. I need assitance.

Notepad is not functioning correctly on my Presario X1000
Computer (uses XP Home Edition). If I save a file in it
(for example, a log file from Hijackthis), I can never
open the file again. They are useless. When I try to
reopen the file, I get a message from windows: "This file
does not have a program associated with it for performing
this action. Create an association in the Folder Options
control panel." But when I go to this "folder Option"
icon in the control panel, and double click on it, there
are no instructions about "creating an association" and I
do not know what to do.

When I go to the Microsoft web site and look up notepad,
I am informed that I can find "notepad" by
going "to "Start; "All Programs", then "Accessories".
Notepad is supposed to be there, but it is not -- Word
Pad is but not notepad. Microsoft offers no other help

How can I get "Notepad" working again?

If you do start > run "notepad" and click OK does notepad run? If so you've
proved that it exists. The fact that the menu shortcut to it doesn't exist
where you and MS believe it should means very little since they are easily
deleted or moved but can just as easily be recreated if the program still
runs.

My thought is this: the file is being saved with an
unknown extension. For example, a normal text file would
end with ".txt" and the like. Try right-clicking on the
file you want to open, and select "Open With..." and then
the "Choose Program" option at the bottom, choosing
NOTEPAD as the application to use. If that works, and
the file opens, close it, and do the same again, but this
time, place a check mark in the box reading "Always use
the selected program to open this kind of file"

That's the first thing I would try to see if this
resolves the problem.

Thanks, Jeff, but this does not work.
When I right click, "open with" comes up, and then a list
of programs to open with .... But Notepad does not show
up on this list (Word Pad does). Also this happens with
ANY file that gets saved in Notepad.

Do you have any other suggestions,
Michael

John,
Sadly, this will still not help me.
1. Yes, I can run "notepad". It exists, and I can create
and save notes. The problem is that I cannot re-open
these notes.

Do you know if Notepad.exe is even still on your PC?
Typically, on XP, it is in C:\Windows. Possibly somehow,
the actual notepad program was removed.

Another alternative would be to install an alternative
notepad-type app, like the free Metapad, which I have
been using for about 3 years. By default now, Metapad is
what opens (on my PCs) for any type of text-based file.

Also, since Wordpad is an option, you could use that to
open the files as well.

Obviously, if he is able to run notepad and save files but not reopen them,
it is installed on his system.

Yes, Notepad.exe still exists on my computer. I can run
it (from "run" after clicking start" and save it as an
icon on my desktop or anywhere else.

Problem with WordPad (and I assume Metapad) -- when I
save something like a log file on Hijackthis, they FORCE
me to save it in Notepad -- I seem to have no other
choice.

Yes, that's right. But what to do?

In "Open with," click "Choose Program." If Notepad isn't listed
there, click "Browse" and navigate to Notepad in c:\windows.

Thanks, Jeff!
This is considerable progress. I can now open these
files, and when I create new ones, I can use your
procedure to reopen them. That's a LONG WAY towards fixed.

Problem is that Notepad still does not show up as
an "Accessory", and I have to go through the proceedure
you outlined every time I create a document. Are these
problems fixable too??

Thanks so much! This works for existing messages, but
does not:
1. Put notepad back in my menu of 'accessories'
2. Work for messages that are newly created. I have have
to use your algorhym each time I make a new note.
Can I fix these issues too?

Use that procedure again, but put a checkmark in the box "Always use the selected program...". The next time you double-click a .txt file it should open in NotePad.

You can create a new shortcut to Notepad to replace the missing one in Accessories. From Start, All Programs, right click on Accessories and select "Explore All Users". In the Windows Explorer window that opens, right click in the right hand pane, select New, then Shortcut. Drill down to notepad.exe the same as you did earlier to open the file, select notepad.exe, OK, etc. That will give you your shortcut back.

If "notepad" now shows up anywhere in your start menu structure you can, of
course, just drag it to accessories or anywhere else you'd like it to
appear. Just click-drag the "notepad" menu entry you can just put it over
"accessories" and that sub-menu will open and then, still click-dragging,
you can put it into the sub-menu and then release the mouse button and the
entry will be relocated. Worth trying anyway.

In control panel--folder options---file types-- scroll down to 'txt' and
highlight txt. It should tell you that notepad is used as opener. If not you
can set it there.
