what's up with notepad?

Every time I double click a text file, I get the hour glass mouse
symbol for about 1-2 seconds, but then nothing. I have to manually
open notepad and then open the file inside notepad. I've tried going
through all of the restore associations for txt files to tell windows
to open txt files. Then I right clicked the file, went to open with
and selected notepad... nothing. I tried it again and selected
wordpad and it worked fine. It doesn't seem to be that the
association between notepad and txt files are corrupted, but more that
something is wrong with calling notepad when double clicking a file.
Anyone have any ideas what I can try? Thanks!

Some types of spyware are known to affect the Notepad
application. Try "SpyBot Search & Destroy" or CWShredder
on your system.

or copy "notepad.exe" from "c:\windows" to "c:\windows\system32"

notepad.exe may be damaged on "c:\windows\system32"
