Problems with .JPG and .PDF formats

On some of the documents that I get from friends who use Outlook as email
software, et attachments come as as .DAT files , which I cannot open. My
friends say that they have sent .JPG or .PDF files, but I get the .DAT I
use Eudora for email and attempts to open a .dat file fail. I am told that it
is the set-up on the outlook mail, but my friends do not know how to change
the settings so that when they send .JPG or .PDF, I can actually open those
with XP or Acrobat.

What should be the settings on Outlook to eliminate the special formatting
that it adds?

Thank you
