problems with email attachments

i have recently downloaded windows xp service pack 2 and
ever since i have had problems opening attachments on my
e-mail. the message says that the "oe has removed access
to unsafe attachments. i know the source of the email
and would like to open the attachments but i don't know
have to allow it. any ideas

I am having the same problem...can't open a .zip file as
an attachment in Outlook Express.

If you get your mail from Exchange, your Exchange Admin can add or remove
file types. I have my doubts whether he/she will do that. The better way is
to ask the sender to rename the file *.txt. Then you save it to your HD and
change the extension back to what it was (zip, exe, vbs or what ever).

If you are not using Exchange, the security level 1 file extensions cannot
be changed.

Outlook Express' default security settings are simply trying to
protect you. OE has no way of telling whether an attachment actually
contains a virus or not, so it temporarily blocks any of those file
types that could potentially contain a virus. In Outlook Express,
Tools > Options > Security, uncheck the "Do not allow attachments to
be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus" option, assuming
you trust the source, of course. The wiser course of action, however,
would be to modify your list of unsafe files, as outlined in the KB
