Outlook Removing Access to Attachments

From time to time I'm having problems opening email
attachments with Outlook Express. I occassionally get a
mesage that says "OE removed access to the following
unsafe attachments in your mail...." These attachments
are usually Word documents, Excel files and other
harmless file types. What is going on? I've also had a
couple of URLs sent to me (either written out or in the
form of a hyperlink) that I can't open here at home, but
can from another computer. Are these two things
related? I'm more irritated with the email issue, so
what can I do to fix this?

Option 1: Click forward on the message w/the attachment and open it from
there (you don't have to click Send on the new message)

Option 2: look in tools, options, security, and untick the box.
If you go with option 2, make sure you have good antivirus software running
that also scans mail - and keep it updated regularly.

Note - this is an XP group; you will probably get a faster and more expert
answer if you post OE questions to an
Outlook Express news group in the future. Try
microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_outlookexpress

If this group isn't carried on your news server, try using
msnews.microsoft.com (MS's public news server - it's the source for all the
microsoft.public newsgroups).

If you're accessing the Microsoft newsgroups through the MS Product Support
Services Community Newsgroups web interface, click
http://communities.microsoft.com/newsgroups/default.asp?icp=InternetExplorer
to get to the Internet Explorer groups, then click the plus sign next to
your version of IE to see the link to the Outlook Express group for that
version number.

Greetings --

Outlook Express' default security settings are simply trying to
protect you. OE has no way of telling whether an attachment actually
contains a virus or not, so it temporarily blocks any of those file
types that could potentially contain a virus. In Outlook Express,
Tools > Options > Security, uncheck the "Do not allow attachments to
be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus" option, assuming
you trust the source, of course. The wiser course of action, however,
would be to modify your list of unsafe files, as outlined in the KB
