problems scanning with Microsoft-antispyware

"I ran all of the final scans and everything seems OK
except for the Microsoft Antispyware beta. When I ran a
manual scan, the machine freezes. It seems to freeze at
the same file point -
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersi
on\Uninstall\WinTools. When it freezes there, it has
found 15 items to be fixed or deleted but the scan will
not complete. Should I just uninstall the program?"

Person uninstalled and reinstalled Microsoft Antispyware
but has same problem.

Any suggestions please?

This is probably an issue with the Security Permissions on the Registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\WinTools
and the subkeys under it. Maybe the Permissions do not grant Full access to
the Administrators group.

If you are an expert with RegEdit, you can take ownership of each of the
problematic keys and assign Full rights to the Adminstrators group. Then
try MSAS again.

Here's another option if you do not feel confident with
regedit.

(This can be difficult for scanners because there is
3 .exe parts to wintools/IBIS one hidden and one running
as a windows service) They all interact and protect each
other from being killed.

It will be easier to run a scan from safe mode as this
will make things go smoother. Before going into safe mode
download this fix tool from Symantec and save it to your
desktop or c:drive :

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/FxWebsch.exe

Then boot into safe mode (Reboot and keep tapping F8 then
choose safe mode from the list) Copy these names down as
you will not be able to use the net in safe mode

Goto start menu and then to control Panel, Open
Add/Remove screen and remove these if found.

Toolbar
WinTools
WebOffer
Websearch
Web Search Toolbar
Win-Tools Easy Installer

Then run the fix tool by double clicking it and let it
finish, Then run MSAS again and it now should be able to
complete a scan, Clear everything found then reboot back
to normal mode and that should be fixed

Let us know if you have any problems

Regards

Andy
