Problem with Windows Update

R

ross m. greenberg

When I tried to do a Windows update through tools in IE7, I get a weird error message telling me that Windows update is on able to figure out what I need updated in I get an error message of "800b0109"

When I look that up on the knowledgebase I don't get anything.

What might be wrong and how can I resolve this problem?

I am running a Windows Vista Ultimate.

Thanks!

Try this:
The BITS Repair Tool will help you fix a problem caused by the corruption of
BITS state files. The problem stops the host process for Windows Services,
which prevents you from using BITS to transfer files. Use this tool to
resolve the corruption and re-enable BITS transfers. After you install this
item, you may have to restart your computer.

Rename the SoftwareDistribution folder. (Because of possible folder
corruption or other errors.)
Click Start, Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Stop.
Stopping the service will take a moment.

Rename the "SoftwareDistribution" folder:
a. Click Start, click Run, type %systemroot%, and then click OK.
b. Right-click the SoftwareDistribution folder, and then click Rename.
c. Type SoftwareDistribution.old, and then press ENTER to rename this
folder.
Create a new folder called "SoftwareDistribution"
Click Start. Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Start.
Starting the service will take a moment.
Rerun Windows Update.

No Go. Same error number

Even tried with a reboot in the middle. There was a Windows Update Service -- that's the one you meant, right? There was no Automatic Updates service

Excuse me for putting my two cents in but that was one of the BIGGEST
mistakes you might have made. Are you attempting to further corrupt your
computer? Do you want a really nice looking boat anchor? Because those
little "tricks" were, at times, necessary before windows '98 but now they
will make things MUCH worse. Why don't you do a logical thing like system
restore or reinstall your system files? Just turn the computer on ande let
it boot up, open a DOS prompt and type SFC /scannow and then let the
operating system repair ITSELF

One of the first things I tried them before posting to this group. SFC tells me that it found some corruption in some system files, it was unable to recover all of them. It further says that it has cut a log, but the log is not able to be accessed. In essence, SFC did nothing to alleviate my problems.

It gets even worse!

For some reason I had lost all my network connections: the network/workgroup at this computer is on is called "RMGNET" I can not get Network Discovery to stay on; but to other computers on the network has basically disappeared. When I open up Network, it tells me that I am not connected to a network.

Help!
