problem with the 'save pictures' dialog

When I right click an image in my browser (IE6 with
latest updates) and 'save picture as...' I only get the
choice of a bmp extension. This is not reflective of the
pictures I am trying to save as they are gifs and jpgs.
Any help appreciated. Thanks
