problem with system32/DRIVERS/isapnp.sys

I'm getting an error message stating that the system32/DRIVERS/isapnp.sys
file is corrupt or missing. From the research I did on another computer last
night, it seems this is a fairly common problem. However none of the
solutions I've found seem to be working for me. I tried using the resolution
posted by Microsoft in which I go through the Recovery Console and use the
prompt screen. However when I try to do the command ren
c:\windows\system32\drivers\isapnp.sys isapnp.old, it says that I do not have
authorization. Now when I went through recovery console, i was not asked for
any administrative password or anything. It took me right to the C:\ screen.
Could this be why that solution does not work?

I have also tried doing a chkdsk under the prompt screen. I've done this 3
times and it has gotten frozen on 27% every time.

In my last attempt, I tried rebooting in safe mode so that I could get to
the file that way, however one I elect to start in safe mode, the computer
starts listing the files like normal until freezing again.

I would appreciate any help.

Try doing a repair install of WinXP--- Boot the PC using your XP disk select
yes for new install. Follow the instructions carefully(read everything).
Select the choice for repair. This will check your XP installation for any XP
file s that are corrupt- if corrupt it will replace. It will not effect your
current setup ( unless you do not follow the instructions). Another option
would be to download SP2 for XP and run that.

I'm not sure I understand the first part. I rebooted with the CD and pressed
R for repair and it took me to a screen where it gives me a c:\ prompt.
Isn't this the only way to go about a repair? I can't actually boot up the
computer to go online, plus I already have SP2 so that point is moot. Any
other thoughts or ideas?

Don't press R at the first screen, just press enter to do a new install. The
next screen is where you want to select the letter for repair installation

Here is the instructions according to MS FAQ

To reinstall Windows XP by starting your computer from the Windows XP CD,
follow these steps: 1. Insert the Windows XP CD into your computer's CD-ROM
or DVD-ROM drive, and then restart your computer.
2. When the "Press any key to boot from CD" message appears on the screen,
press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.

Note Your computer must be configured to start from the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM
drive. For more information about how to configure your computer to start
from the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, see your computer's documentation or
contact your computer manufacturer.
3. You receive the following message on the Welcome to Setup screen that
appears:
This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft Windows XP to run on
your computer:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

Press ENTER to set up Windows XP.

4. On the Windows XP Licensing Agreement screen, press F8 to agree to the
license agreement.

5. Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected in the
box, and then press R to repair Windows XP.

6. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to reinstall Windows
XP. After you repair Windows XP, you may have to reactivate your copy of
Windows XP.

Now if I follows those instructions is it going to repair or re-install?
Because my parents have nothing backed up on the computer. So reinstallation
would be my last option. If it's just a repair though, I'll go ahead with it.

Alright well I got to the part where I accept the agreement with F8 and then
need to choose from two partitiions. However there is no option to press R
to Repair for either of them. What now?

I am now getting other error messages when rebooting including a memory
write/read failure when i don't have the reinstallation disc in, as well as
a failure of this <windows root> \system32\hal.dll and a problem with the
acpi.sys being found. I could really use some help, none of the suggestions
in recovery console are working.

You are apparently having severe hardware failures. Software solutions
(Windows Recovery Console, reinstalling Windows, etc.) are useless for
hardware problems.

Here are general hardware troubleshooting steps:

Testing hardware failures often involves swapping out suspected parts
with known-good parts. If you can't do the testing yourself and/or are
uncomfortable opening your computer, take the machine to a professional
computer repair shop (not your local equivalent of BigStoreUSA).
