Problem with quick launch bar in win xp sp2

I have 2 generic short cut icons on the quick launch bar that are not valid
short cuts. They used to be Publisher and PowerPoint until on day when I
booted up they were generic and I cannot delete them due to a Cyclic
redundancy check error. I cannot drag them off the bar. I can not delete them
with a command prompt window due to the CRC error. If I leave the quick
launch bar active the computer slows to a crawl so I disabled it. Any one
ever have this problem? How can these icons be deleted? Help!!

Have you check your computer for virus and spyware? Further, boot your
Windows in Safe Mode and then try to delete those annoying shortcuts.

I have tried to delete in safe mode. It does not work. Some how windows
messed these two short cuts up, so there must be a way to un mess them. I
Hope! The computer is part of a closly monitored system and constantly
checked for virus and spy ware problems. Thanks for the input.

rajkohli, I tried the new solution you posted and it did not work. I still
have 2 invalid shortcuts on my quick launch bar that cannot be deleted, moved
or anything because of a "cyclic redundancy check" error. I cannot use the
quick launch area because the presence of the 2 bad shortcuts slow the
computer to a crawl. Thanks for your input.

I downloaded and ran xptools plus 2 other registry scanners. None of them
were of any help. They did not detect the 2 invalid shortcuts. I think I will
just give up and live without a quick launch bar.

The last thing that I can suggest you is:

Run a CHKDSK /F on your System Partition.
Update your antivirus software and then check your system for viruses.
Further, disable your anti-virus temporary and then try to delete those
shortcuts.

Try the following link:

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Goto line no. 117 - download and update registry.

Last but not the least:

Put your hard-disk to another pc. Goto the Quick Launch Folder. Something like
C:\Documents and Settings\Students\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Quick Launch
Then try to delete those shortcuts.

Hope this information helps you, let us know!
