problem with paging file.... Please help!

I tried to log onto my computer yesterday and it just beeped when it said
"loading your personel preferences". so i did ctrl, alt, del, and it came to
my desktop. but then i tried to run a couple programs, and i realized it was
very low on virtual memory and that there was no paging file. so i went
into the ctrl panel and tried to set my paging file but it said that it
created a temp. paging file because there was a problem with the main one.
and every time i try to set a paging file it says the same thing. this
wouldn't be a problem if i didn't have such low ram. i have looked at
microsoft's help but nothing is working. Please help me!

I would set the page file to 0 (zero) , ie. check "No pagefile". Reboot
In command prompt do "dir c:\page*.* /a" . It should return "File not found"

Now set the page file as you want (best leave at system managed, unless low
on disk space too, (or 512MB if comp memory is 256MB, my preference) )
Reboot
