Paging File Error

G

Guest

'm running Windows XP Professional SP2. Everytime windows starts I get this
error message:

"Limited Virtual Memory
Your system has no paging file or the paging file is too small"

then the rest of the error message tells me how to change to size of the
paging file.

When I go to change my page file settings I get this message:
"Windows created a temporary paging file on your computer because of a
problem that occurred with your paging file configuration when you started
your computer. The total paging file size for all disk drives may be somewhat
larger than the size you specified."

Changing the paging file size or letting windows manage it does not fixed
the problem. Also, chaning these settings and rebooting doesn't even change
what the control panel "thinks" my paging file is at.

I think the problem is just that my pagefile is gone, period. I can't find
any file named pagefile.sys, both using the search feature and manually
searching my windows folder (hidden and system files are visibile). If I run
'system information' (start > run > msinfo32.exe) it tells me I have 737.04
MB of page file space, and the page file location is
C:\windows\system32\temppf.sys, which must just be the temporary file
mentioned by the error message.

I have looked up every microsoft knowledge base article even remotely
related to paging files/virtual memory. The only ones that resemble my
problem are these:
a)http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315270 says that
admin privledges could cause this problem. There is only one user account on
this computer, it is the administrator account, and following the
instructions on the article reveals that they already have full control.
b)http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;257758 says that
the problem can be caused by not having enough hard drive space for the
paging file. I have ~40 GB of free space.
c)http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;316528 says that
certain intel chipsets can cause this problem when you upgrade to windows xp.
I do not have one of the specified chipsets so this has not solved the
problem either.

I have Avast Anti-Virus Home Edition Version 4, Spybot S&D and ZoneAlarm
Internet Security Suite Version 7 installed and fully updated. Ran all of
them. Also tried running check disk and running defrag. None of them fixed
the problem.
I just purchased a legal copy of Windows through the WGA Kit and after
receiving my new disc I did a completely fresh install.

I don't know what to do anymore.

Please someone help.

The only two reasons I've seen for this are;
1.) Usually the result of someone trying to secure their pc and removing
"Everyone" full control, Directory Permissions on the %systemdrive%
"Everyone" also includes the System Account (NT Authority) which is the
operating system's account.

Make sure that the System account (NT Authority) has full control of the
%systemdrive% and or the drive your trying to put the pagefile on. My

2.) The drive letter has changed

I have no idea how this happened but I found that on my C: that SYSTEM had
all controls except for Full Permission. My D: had the same problem.

All sorted out now.

Thnka you very much.

PS: The drive letter thing helped me sort out the problem that I was having
trying to change my D: from I:. Disk Management in the MMC wouldn't allow me
to. Because this is a fresh install I only had data and no installed
programs, the warning posted on the MS KB was irrelevent.)

Hello,
I have the same message. It only appeared after I had installed a program from microsoft called "Plus!"

This message started at the next boot and follows your description to the letter.

Did you ever get a "fix" input from anyone??
