Problem with driver for ethernet controller

Larry

I have been trying to install a network card on Windows
XP Home. The card itself will show up in the Device
Manager as a Network Adapter: Intel 21140-Based PCI Fast
Ethernet Adapter (Generic) and the driver appears to be
properly loaded. However, under Other Devices, there is
an Ethernet Controller listed, and it says that the
drivers for this device are not installed. I do not
understand the connection between the two devices and
have been unsuccessful in loading a driver for this.

What is this and how can I get a driver loaded for this?

Thanks

I am not sure how close my situation was to yours.
My new motherboard apparently came with some
sort of adapter/driver that kept showing up along
with my expected Nic card that I installed.

Eventually I disabled it in Control Panel --> System.
Some Nic cards come with floppy disks that have
the driver and they use the "have disk" method of
updating a device driver.

Also you can manually select the Nic card and
driver to install for your device as long as it is
on the XP approved hardware list of included
drivers. Eventually I solved my problem by
trying a different Nic card; the one I was trying
to use was defective. Rereading your post,
what does the network card say on it that
you have installed? Use the driver for that
description. I assume you only have one Nic
card installed? To summarize my experience:
I disabled the ethernet device that I knew
nothing about, and tried a different Nic card
instead of the one I was using and I think
it is better to do that sooner rather than later
as I spent three days looking for software answers.

Stephen
